  • Good for the MIND: Year 12 sponsored walk

    Published 04/07/25

On the second day of Purbeck activities, students from the sixth form engaged in a ‘Ten pounds for ten miles’ sponsored walk in support of the charity Dorset MIND. Organised by head of year Mr Smith, the party headed out into Wareham Forest equipped with sunblock, water and biscuits, and walked the route in four hours.

As buzzards soared in a cloudless sky, we agreed that we live in a beautiful part of the world and are pleased to have raised around £300 for a charity close to our hearts. Many students stayed on to enjoy an informal barbeque and picnic on the rear lawns. Well done to all those involved!

  • Weston Walk with The National Trust

    Published 02/07/25

As part of Purbeck’s Activities Week, a number of Year 12 students completed the ‘Weston Walk’ from Worth Matravers to the coast. The students were led by The National Trust’s Jill Bailey, who provided information about the local habitat and the Trust’s conservation projects in the area. The students took to their tasks of bramble clearing and litter picking with enthusiasm, and all were rewarded with what must be the best pasties in the south, sponsored by The National Trust, upon their return to The Square and Compass pub. Head of Sixth Form, Simon Holmes, said,"This is another great example of our partnership with the Trust, and it is wonderful to spend time together along the coast. The students have done a fine job on the land, culminating in refreshments at the best pub in the world!’ Only soft drinks were had.

Purbeck Sixth Formers are engaged in a range of activities this week, including volunteering, completing a sponsored walk which raises money for the charity Dorset MIND, environmental work and visits to both local and national theme parks.

  • Environmental Leaders Present to Local Conservation Leaders

    Published 25/06/25

Our Environmental Leadership course pupils have been working hard on one of their projects which has involved canvassing their peers on their experience of nature in the local vicinity.

They assisted in preparing questionnaires which they presented to their tutor groups, one being qualitative in form and the other quantitative.

They worked extremely hard in collating the results at speed and presenting them in a visual display, ready for a visit from a group of representatives from local conservation and wildlife charities.

They presented their findings to the visitors, both in an informal chat around their displays, and a more formal Q&A panel style discussion.

Through this project they have learnt a variety of skills, including data collection and presentation, and been taken way out of their comfort zone in developing their public speaking skills.

This project was a huge challenge and the pupils rose to it admirably. Many thanks to our visitors for coming along to enable our pupils to share their findings with you.

  • Ofsted, exceptionally impressed!

    Published 02/05/25

    Dear Purbeck families,

As you are probably aware we had a visit from Ofsted this week. Three inspectors visited across the two days and they looked at all aspects of the school. They completed an ‘ungraded’ inspection (which is what they often do with schools that are rated ‘Good’) this means that they can not officially change the grading of the school at the end of the inspection but they can make recommendations.

We are not allowed to share the official outcome of the inspection just at the moment as the report has to be moderated. However, what I can tell you is that the inspectors were exceptionally impressed with what they saw and that the overall outcome could not have been better!

  • Purbeck Linguists Visit British Library

    Published 19/03/25

Pictured above is the Year 12 English Language group (and the orange-topped Mr Clay) standing in front of the iconic clock tower of the British Library in Kings Cross, London. We were fortunate to secure a workshop delivered by the Lead Curator of Spoken English at the library, Jonathan Robinson, who provided an informative and engaging presentation about aspects of English-speaking accents and dialects. This included the differing grammatical functions of the filler ‘like’, dialectical variants of the adjective ‘attractive’ (you may or may not wish to ask your daughter/son the meaning of ‘leng’) and the impact of ‘out migration’ upon the English language. After the workshop, the group explored some of the library’s collection of significant texts such as a copy of the Magna Carta dating back to 1215 (the library holds two of the existing four original copies) and a handwritten original copy of John Lennon’s lyrics to The Beatles’, Mr Holmes’ favourite.
