Y9 Pine Pulling – Kestrel & Kingfisher

13th November 2024 was the start of Year 9 Pull-a-pine conservation work that saw 172 students explore Arne heathland across 2 days. They were extremely lucky with the weather and students got to experience breath-taking views across the Purbeck countryside and of Corfe Castle.

Students completed conservation work, specifically the pulling up of pine trees which encourages heathland regeneration and protects natural habitats. This is a valuable contribution to the conservation of our local area whilst also being a fun and educational activity. Students had talks from the National Trust and Dorset Heaths about the importance of looking after our heathlands.

Thank you to the National Trust Purbeck Countryside for providing free coach transport for our Year 9’s and organising the day. Thank you to Dorset Heaths for helping with the 2 days of conservation work and their great talks about the animals and plants that live on the heathland.

A couple of highlights were some students choosing to venture into the gorse to get the biggest pine trees and a student finding a rare oyster catcher skull!
