Y8 Studland Fieldwork Enrichment

On Wednesday 27th 47 Y8 students went to Studland Bay on the first of the Y8 Geography Enrichment Days. Despite the very cold weather and wet start to the morning students were enthusiastic and motivated with lots of questions!

The day started with a talk from the National Trust all about Studland including the wildlife and WW2 history, the students were definitely most interested to hear about the numerous movies that had sections filmed here including the new Wicked movie! The Dorset Heaths Partnership then ran a 2-hour session in the dunes investigating sand dune formation, students used quadrats, light meters, anemometer, clinometers and meter rules to complete this investigation. Students also learnt different bird calls, hunted for fungi and completed a sound grab with the Urban Heaths team. Thank you to Sarah and her team for organising this.

After a quick lunch at Knoll Beach students walked along to Middle Beach where we discussed the effectiveness of coastal management strategies and saw the power of erosion in action. Finally, we walked up to Fort Henry and students learnt about the practice D-Day landings and chose to get their feet wet in the WW2 Bunker!
