Year 8 Boys Dorset School Handball Champions
Purbeck’s year 8 boys continued their unbeaten run to 8 games successfully winning the Dorset School Games without losing a game!
Purbeck started brightly against a very big Wey Valley side who were tactically outwitted with a strong zone defence and swish counter attack convincingly winning 6-1. The next game was a complete miss-match with Purbeck overpowering Winton 9-1 being hugely clinical in front of goal. After an extended break, Purbeck had a grudge match against last year’s champions Lockyers (the team the boys came second to last year). Revenge was sweet with Purbeck dominating the match 10-4 despite them having two very tall and athletic boys. Unfortunately Purbeck then became a little complacent only narrowly beating a very physical Gryphon School team 3-2. With one group stage game left a win would put Purbeck automatically into the final. This only spurred the boys on to demolish Allenbourn 8-2 and book their place in the final. Despite having won all of their games in the tournament thus far, other teams were starting to target Purbecks key shooters and were tactically trying to foul them out of the game. Irrespective of this, the boys came through strong with a really team performance in the final thrashing Wey Valley for the second time 12-4.
To give a ‘player of the tournament’ would be morally wrong due to the sheer team effort put in with all but one of the students scoring at least once in a fantastic team display. After the disappointment on losing out on gold medals last year, the boys thoroughly deserved their win and really were a great asset to the school, playing hard and fair whilst progressing their skill-sets and team cohesion along the way. The boys will now represent Dorset at the South-West Championships in Paignton on 1st May.
