Year 7 Rugby Win 25-5 vs Poole High and Draw 15-15 with St Edwards
The year 7 rugby team won their first game for school on Tuesday against Poole High whilst also drawing a highly competitive game against St Edwards.
Having narrowly lost their previous two games last week, the boys were still upbeat and raring to go in their first game against Poole High. The time they had put into training in the last week showed straight away with some quick fire tries from Aspen Critchell putting the boys into an early lead. The defence in particular was vastly improved, with a wall of red and black rarely being broken down. After going through some rucking phases, Jacob Bamber scored his first of the afternoon swiftly followed by good support play from Finn Wilde to score his first try for the school. Poole High scored a late consolation, before a third try from Aspen Critchell sealed the victory at 25-5.
Next up were St Edwards who had some very strong runners, therefore presenting a significantly more difficult challenge. Purbeck took an early lead through a crash ball taken by Jacob Bamber, but were pegged back straight away from the kick off. Aspen Critchell extended Purbecks lead with a solo try running through the entire opposition back-line to put Purbeck back in the lead. The game was then fiercely contested in the middle of the pitch, with Purbecks defence finally relenting (due to fatigue), conceding two quick tries in succession. With 2 minutes to go a growth mind-set approach was adopted. Reuben Adams made an excellent break sucking in defenders left right and centre, with Jamie Reeves being their in support to equalise making the score 15-15. In the final play, St Edwards threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Purbeck defence which stay strong, mainly thanks to an outstanding try saving tackle from Harry Hann.
A vastly improved performance from the boys this week, demonstrating excellent progress. The boys take on Poole Grammar next week, who will undoubtable be formidable opposition.
