Year 11 visit to Merton College, Oxford
On Tuesday last week, some year 11 students had the opportunity to experience life on an Oxford University Campus, Merton College. Set in the middle of Oxford city centre but surrounded by beautiful gardens and grounds, Merton College is a picturesque and prestigious place to attend university.
In the morning, we were given an insight into what it takes to become a student at Oxford and met two current undergraduates who filled us in on their daily life as students. Following on from our talk, we had a chance to walk around the beautiful grounds and buildings – passing by the Tolkien table where the famous author of the Hobbit, JRR Tolkien, would sit and write his tales of the Shire. We were then taken for lunch in a very grand dining room filled with portraits and shields that felt a little like something out of a Harry Potter novel.
Our day ended with a tour of the botanical gardens of Merton College. By looking at ancient species and their medical properties we gained an understanding about the importance of plant conservation.
