UKMT Intermediate Challenge

The beginning of March saw four Key Stage 3 students travelling to The Bishop of Winchester Academy in Bournemouth to take part in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Team Challenge. After multiple Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates were awarded to individuals for the UKMT Intermediate Challenge at the end of last year, four students were chosen based on their enthusiasm, problem-solving skills and ability to work as a team.

Finn Wilde, Jacob Snell, Jazmin Astells and Charlie Orchard competed against twenty other teams in four rounds. Students were accompanied by Mrs Vater and two A-Level Further Mathematics students, Matthew Atkins and Callum Stent.

The rounds consisted of a cross-number, shuttle, relay round and a group round. An example of a shuttle question can be seen below. After these four forty-five-minute rounds, the team succeeded in placing 8th out of the twenty one teams present – a considerable achievement. The Mathematics Department would like to congratulate all students involved; we are already looking ahead to taking part next year – watch this space!
