‘A commitment that virtually ALL students can learn all important academic knowledge to a level of excellence if…

• allowed the right amount of time to learn;

• provided with the appropriate conditions to learn’.

Teaching for Mastery aims to share our research and experiences of our mastery approach to teaching and learning mathematics. Research shows that teaching fewer topics in much greater depth improves outcomes. The Purbeck School has been identified as one of the lead schools for mastery in the country. Two years ago, we participated in the Shanghai-England Maths Research Project. This year, we have widened the idea of mastery into all subjects across the school. Teaching for Mastery aims to share our story so far…

(*) Teaching for Mastery will consist of workshops and three lesson observations, which will focus on:

  • Applying variation theory into the planning and delivery of lessons;
  • Use of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations to support learning;
  • How to develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of methods and concepts;
  • Assessment strategies that identifies students’ strengths and weaknesses;
  • How to use retrieval practice and interleaving to boost retention.
