Sixth Form Basketball: Purbeck 39 Milton Abbey 33
On Wednesday 23rd November, Purbeck played their first Sixth Form basketball game of the season against Milton Abbey School. Purbeck fielded a highly inclusive team with a mixture of sixth form boys, girls and three year 11 students. The game was played in incredibly good spirit with ex-Purbeck teacher, Ed Lynn, inviting the students over to Milton Abbey after Christmas for a rematch.
Purbeck started brightly with their five strongest players on the court, led by the formidable Finlay Hartwell scoring numerous points straight from the off. Ellen Rhodes started off to a flyer, with two mid-range jump shots, with Tom Munns rebounding higher than any other player on the court. After a dominant first quarter, Milton Abbey restructured their zone defence which made it more significantly difficult for Purbeck to create easy high percentage shots. This brought Milton Abbey right back into the game, only trailing by 5 points by the fourth quarter. The up stepped Efe Ashak, with one quick driven lay-up, followed by an open court three pointer to extended Purbeck lead. With Milton Abbey exchanging further points of their own, Ellen Rhodes also downed a three from the left-hand side of the court. With some great rebounding and blocking from Adam Buckett and Kit Lusby, along with an attempted ‘dunk’ by Finlay Hartwell, Purbeck ended up winning a highly enjoyable afternoon by 6 points.
As well as a rematch against Milton Abbey, Ferndown Upper and Corfe Hills are also keen for friendly games, so watch this space. A very fun afternoon of diverse basketball, exactly what sport in the modern era should be about. Well done to all students involved.
