Year 10 Rugby Result – Purbeck 38 St Edwards 20
The Purbeck year 10 rugby team made an excellent start to their season with a comprehensive win against a very physical St Edwards team.
Purbeck started brightly with a great kick-off return camping themselves in the St Edwards half, eventually moving the defences from left to right to create space for Sam Bowen to score his first in the corner. Purbeck then continued to pile on the pressure and after a significant period of time in the 22, from the opposition scrum Sam scored his second of the game by intercepting a wayward pass between the opposition centres. St Edwards then came back at Purbeck and with phase after phase scored due to some miss tackles. In the final play of the half, St Edwards had an overlap which they butchered with the opposition winger dropping the ball straight into the hands of Kyle Cavendish, who then ran the ball in to score under the posts from halfway. Jamie Foskett converted two of the three conversions to make the half time score 19-5.
The start off the second half, Purbeck dominated by running in some excellent tries to extend their lead. First off Kyle Cavendish found space from an excellent draw and pass from Jamie Foskett to score his second of the afternoon. The next two tries were extremely well worked, with some excellent phase play drawing in defenders to create space for Declan Jang and Ollie Peters to combine to score. After ringing the changes and rotating the 21 man squad for the last 20 minutes, the game was significantly more even with ST Edwards running in two late tries to end up with the finishing score of 38-20.
A special mention to man of the match to flanker Kian Salina, who was excellent all afternoon in both the line-out and ruck, stabilising a very makeshift forward pack.
Team: Cameron-Haigh, Morris, Thompson, Brown, Daly, Long, Salina, Reeves, Peters, Jang, Foskett, Cavendish, Bowen, Waterman, Gordon, Blackham-Byrne, Yarrow, Carter-Hobbs, Maytum, Hughes, Wilson.
Year 9 Rugby Result – Purbeck 5 St Edwards 48
The team was made up of a mixture of players from Years 8 and 9, with many boys making their school (and rugby!) debut. The biggest ‘plus’ from the evening is that 21 boys represented the school in this Year 9 rugby match against St. Edward’s School. Facing a team with many strong ball-carriers the Purbeck boys never stopped trying and eventually their efforts were rewarded with a late try scored by scrum-half and captain Freddie Tozer. Pack leader Charlie Orchard also impressed with the ball in hand and the Purbeck Man of the Match prize went to Harrison Sadd for his overall work-rate and tackling.
Team: Cook, Orchard, Sadd, Lander, Bates, Loveless, Bamber, Neat, Tozer, Munns, Mitchell, Shaylor, Newman, Schuitemaker, Serdynski, Lowaki, Turner, Trenwith, Lally, Dean.
