History Trip to Dorset Castles!

History students from Years 7 and 8 braved heatwaves and also a little rain, on a day trip to visit and study fortified sites around Dorset. Students explored three extraordinary sites around the area…

  • Corfe Castle – this magnificent Medieval ruin needs no introduction, and never disappoints!
  • Maiden Castle – located near Dorchester, is the largest Iron Age hillfort in Britain… students moaned a bit(!) as they staggered up the steep banks, but were wowed when they reached the top and learned the scale of this incredible prehistoric earthwork.
  • Nothe Fort – this huge and complex Victorian construction overlooking Weymouth and Portland Harbour saw active use during the World Wars of the 20th Century. Students explored the ramparts and tunnels, including the infamous ‘Ghost Passage’…

Students relished applying their Year 7 learning to understand the development of fortifications through 2500 years. It was a great (and exhausting) day out!
