Going beyond the media headlines
Three brave Y13 students took on a number of private and state schools in the 2020 South West Championship of Debating Matters at Sherborne School for Girls yesterday. Daisy Tozer, Anabel Boakes and Tom Holland delved deeper into some of the biggest issues confronting society at the moment – topics such as autonomous vehicles, climate emergency and childhood vaccinations, with The Purbeck Sixth Form trio winning the latter debate and beating the host school, Sherborne School for Girls.
Assistant Headteacher, Simon Holmes, said “They did fantastically. This was their first true debating competition in a format that we were previously unfamiliar with. It is great to see that our students and those that represented other schools are already fluently engaging with the important issues of our times. They have become impressive role models.”
Other schools involved in the debate included Exeter College, The Gryphon School, Bryanston School and the overall winning team attended from Sturminster Newton SFC.
“It really pushed me out of my comfort zone, intimidating at times but overall it was very enjoyable” said Daisy Tozer.
