Football Match report – Sixth Form v Canford School
County Cup Round 1
The Sixth form football team began their season with an intriguing first round tie away at Canford School. The Purbeck boys may have felt a little out of place in the Public school surroundings however the perfect playing surface and excellent weather conditions allowed Purbeck to play some excellent football on the day.
There was very little between the two teams throughout despite Purbeck having the lions share of the possession enjoying the opportunity to keep the ball on the floor on the blemish less pitch.
It was Purbeck that made the breakthrough as a corner led to a goal mouth scramble and Max Afful scrambled the ball over the line. Purbeck continued to push for a second goal however a defensive lapse led to a Canford equaliser just before half time.
The second half was very even and saw Canford take advantage of some lack lustre Purbeck defending from a corner to take the lead. Purbeck pushed for an equaliser which duly came as Charlie Dyke was upended in the penalty area as the goal beckoned and Matt Drake ruthlessly dispatched the resultant penalty.
The game went into extra time despite Purbeck in particular pushing hard for a winner, however they got their reward as in the first half of extra time another goal mouth scramble from a corner led to Tom Hayes converting from close range. Purbeck could have added to their lead near the end but got over the line to book their place in the second round draw.
Well done chaps!
