AMSP ‘Maths Feast’ at The Blandford School
The 20th of March saw four very talented and enthusiastic Year 10 Mathematicians – Tori White, Joe Daly, Geoffrey Edley and Roisin Hegarty – attend the ‘Maths Feast’ event run by the AMSP at The Blandford School. There were over ten teams in attendance.
Students engaged in four rounds of brain-baffling, mind-melting, high-intensity maths problems arranged as a ‘starter’, ‘main’, ‘dessert’ and ‘petit fours’. Our Year 10s were commended for their performance in the ‘main round’ – a comprehension task introducing students to an A-Level-difficulty topic from the applied maths legacy syllabus. Furthermore, the team successfully scored full marks on the ‘dessert’ round – a higher or lower shuttle reminiscent of ‘The Price is Right’ although requiring much higher precision and the retrieval of a wide range of key skills and facts. Our students were one of only two teams to score full marks on this round, the other being the team from Poole Grammar School.
Overall, all teams enjoyed an engaging and challenging morning of mathematical meanderings. Several teachers from other schools commented on the mature level of teamwork, discussion and engagement of our school’s team, leading to the students being awarded a certificate for ‘Great Teamwork’. They demonstrated the qualities of respect, aspiration and perseverance that are central to our school community and we look forward to attending similar opportunities in future.
