Science

Our aim is to enable an enthused learning of science and promote science as a relevant and creative option which can lead to a range of exciting and interesting careers. For September 2013, three new laboratories, a new preparation area and ICT room will further enhance the facilities science already offers giving us a total of thirteen laboratories and three ICT rooms at our disposal. Stimulating media, digital cameras and microscopes, interactive whiteboards and computer packages are all used in lessons to further students’ understanding.

Key stage three

Our Fusion Science course will provide the most comprehensive coverage of the skills and content required by the new KS3 curriculum. Opportunities are provided for literacy, numeracy, ICT and thinking skill development as well as the chance to really establish a broad scientific understanding. Practical work will be an integral part of the course and it will be used to develop student investigative skills, confidence and enjoyment of the subject. The course is designed to engage students with interesting and fun lessons.

Extra-curricular opportunities have previously included trips to the London Science Museum, Poole Hospital, the Lyme Regis fossil fair and Kimmeridge. Students have studied the physics of surfing, attended our ‘Meet the Scientist’ days and applied for Nuffield bursaries. Those with an interest in medicine have regularly met with visiting doctors and students have attended local first schools to present highly successful science workshops that they themselves have developed.
